Butterfly Garden & Trail
The Butterfly Garden and Trail is located on the west edge of Monona near the Family Aquatic Center and the High School recreation fields. When Monona was awarded $36,000 in another (REAP) grant to extend the trail, it nearly doubled its original size to about 1 1/2 miles. It currently consists of a wildlife corridor and 3,100 foot trail to be used by area residents for exercise, recreation, and wildlife viewing. Along the trails for various trees, shrubs, and benches donated to the garden and trail in memory of love ones.
Today an estimated 30-50 people use the trail daily in addition to the volunteers who continually develop their plots in the garden area. Encompassing about five acres in the southwest portion of Monona, the trail provides more opportunities for passive and active recreation and connects three of Monona's public gardens, two of which are Memorial Gardens.
We need your help to "grow" the Monona Butterfly Garden & Trail and are always looking for volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to help us maintain the gardens and/ or trail. Whether your commitment be for one hour, one project, or a recurring volunteer, we appreciate everyone's extra efforts. We gladly accept donations for the gardens, whether it be memorials for a loved one, cash donations, or an anonymous donation. If you are interested in volunteering or memorializing a loved one by making a donation to help Monona's Butterfly Garden and Trail, please contact the Chamber office and we'll put you in touch with the lead volunteer at the Butterfly Garden & Trail

Many thanks go to the city of Monona, REAP & local volunteers who helped Monona Butterfly Gardens & Trail to get started, almost double its length, & connect it with other city parks. Thanks always to the volunteers & city workers who daily help maintain our natural gem.

Volunteers Help Us Maintain & Grow!
We need to continually maintain the Monona Butterfly Garden & Trail and are always looking for volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to help us grow and maintain the gardens and trail system. The county does a Trail Survey Count Project two to three times each year, and our neighbors in the community pitch in for two-hour shifts on a Friday or Saturday. There are Spring and fall clean-ups, plus weeding throughout the growing season and you or your group may adopt and care for your own garden or patch of ground. Whether your commitment is just to give an hour of your time, or work to complete a project, or become a regular volunteer to maintain the gardens or trails, the citizens appreciate every single effort. We gladly accept donations for the gardens, whether it be memorials for a loved one, cash donations, or an anonymous donation. If you are interested in volunteering, memorializing a loved one, or making a donation to help Monona's Butterfly Garden and Trail, please contact the MCED office at (563) 539-8340.
