MONONA -- IN THE NEWS!
Spring Has (Almost) Sprung in Monona!

Ever wondered how many flowers it took in c. 1930s for Monona to be dubbed the “Garden City of Iowa”? Are you contributing to the town’s pristine garden appeal? Is Monona living up to its high standards set by our forefathers? Today, we see many folks taking great pride in maintaining their residential and commercial properties; some don’t, which may cause a nuisance the city must address later. Let’s see if 2016 inspires more folks to plant extra annual or perennial flowers, flowering shrubs and trees in beds, buckets, baskets, and gardens at your home or storefront. Our two new entry billboards boast “Garden City of Iowa” and --- with the extra help and hard work by the city and property owners -- Monona shall keep alive its image of beautiful flowering gardens, and clean, well-maintained properties.
Coming soon there are several ways and opportunities to help you improve your property. Declutter and get “trash and treasures” organized this Spring, properly recycle old appliances or electronics, generate some extra cash by selling unwanted items at a garage sale, donate unnecessary items in return for a potential tax deduction, etc. The city of Monona is greatly helping these effort by providing opportunities and clean-up services “free of charge” to its existing garbage collection customers.
Spring city-wide garage sales run April 28 – May 1. Spring city-wide garage sales run April 28 – May 1. Garage sale operators may promote garage sale locations and items for sale for a fee on the large pull-out map, get a yard sign, and extra promotion by the chamber and city. Map includes chamber business locations to encourage folks to stay in town longer to shop at garage sales or stores, get a manicure or tires rotated, grab a bite to eat or drink, etc. Organize a sale with family and friends and have fun while you clean out your house, garage or yard.
A manned Goodwill truck will be at Monona Community Center parking lot on Saturday, May 7 to accept donations from 8 a.m. to 12 noon only. This is a chance to donate any items you didn’t sell in your garage sale or that you don’t want after Spring cleaning at your house or yard. Be sure to obtain a Goodwill receipt that may be eligible (ask your tax advisor) for a tax deduction on your 2016 return.
It’s time to clean up, fix up and paint during Monona’s Clean-up Week May 9 – 14. Every citizen and business owner should participate at some level in this joint effort to maintain our town as a safe, beautiful place in which to live and work. Get rid of wintered junk, potential health and fire hazards, high weeds, etc. so our homes, yards, places of business, streets, alley ways, vacant lots, schools, churches, and neighborhoods will in tip-top shape. Start on repairs you have been planning all winter, check wiring and roofs, put on a new coat of paint to protect and beautify at the same time.
Garbage Amnesty Days are May 9 – 10, offered by the city as a free service to its garbage collection customers to clear away larger, bulky, not-regularly-accepted items. This comes at the perfect time for folks to clear out debris and clutter from around the house, garage or yard. Specific item details will be shared at a later date on the chamber’s Facebook page, and in the city’s notice to its customers.
Appliance / Electronics Collection Day is May 11, and also a free service offered by the city to its garbage collection customers. This is a chance to purge worn-out appliances like refrigerator, freezer, stove, and electronics like old computers, printers, copiers, TVs. Another option, at your own expense, is to use Clayton County Recycling’s services to divest of a broken-down vehicle on your property.
A little investment and some collective hard work now and over Springtime will have Monona looking its best to show off to friends and guests for Glow Run on June 17 and Hay Days Festival & Parade on June 18. And best of all, our pride and our gardens will grow! If you’d like more information about any of the programs and opportunities listed above, please contact Sophie or Linda at Monona City Hall at (563) 539-2355 or Rogeta at Monona Chamber at (563) 539-8340.
