MONONA -- IN THE NEWS!
Do you care about Monona's Butterfly Gardens & Trails?

At the mid-February, 2016 meeting of 50 community members, Trees Forever representatives and the local Community Visioning Steering Committee, the Butterfly Gardens and Trail were cited as “points of pride” and considered to be Monona assets. The area is frequently promoted by the city as one of our nicer features.
Since its inception in 2000, that area has been largely maintained by volunteers and donations, with the City of Monona providing some financial support and mowing Garden View Park.
Each year the Butterfly Gardens and Trails Committee has asked for people to help with the work involved in taking care of the areas. While we have occasionally had some help, it has not been consistent or ongoing. Community involvement is desperately needed. The work is simply too much for this small-but-dedicated committee and the few citizens who do help.
We need people who are willing to be responsible for a specific job on a regular basis. We have a variety of gardening and lawn care tasks that need to be done, from planting, weeding, mowing, trimming, and wood chipping to cleaning the furniture and signs. The raised planters need to be planted and taken care of all summer. The big jobs can easily be divided into smaller ones so no one needs to take on a larger job than can be handled easily.
As a resident of a community that professes to be the Garden City of Iowa, would you consider helping? It would certainly be a shame to lose these Gardens and Trails because of lack of community interest or when our present volunteers may no longer be able to help & no one else from the next generation-down steps up to volunteer their help. It is a beautiful public area which contributes much to Monona, and gives us all a tranquil wooded area in which to relax or recreate and enjoy nature right in the midst of town. Recruit your friends, family, and church members to jointly take on a certain task or a specific bed or section of the gardens or trails. Please offer to help us & your efforts will be forever appreciated by everyone.
